Beware of ‘The Screenplay Agency’

I should start off by saying I've never used or sent anything to 'The Screenplay Agency' before. I'm putting out this alert, because after I saw their Google ads appear on my website, I did a little research on the company. According to numerous blog articles (like this one from the screenwriting life) and forum posts (like this one from without a box), they are not a legitimate agency and indiscriminately will "accept" any piece of writing sent to them. After your initial correspondence they apparently try to pitch you on paying them to create a treatment of your screenplay.

Please don't take my word for it, read the links above. The blog post by Danny Broderick from the screenwriting life is especially enjoyable to read. He sent them a nonsense script and documented the correspondence he had with their company. I highly suggest you read it and stay away from the screenplay agency.

It is true that a screenwriting agent should never ask for money up front. I think the Screen writing agency is very unique and I defintely don't think they are a scam. For one they do not ask for money up front. They only earn 10% if your work is sold. And they money you guys are talking about is for a qulified person who has dealt with the screenplay business to review your work and give you points to make it a quality screenplay. They're defintely not gonna sell your screenplay if it's not sellable. I think it is actually good because I learned soooo much. I did spend money on working with someone to help develope my talent, but it was my choice and I defintely did not have to do it,. The way I look at it I think it is good for first time screenwritiers.

I wrote some screenplays in

I wrote some screenplays in my 20s and was shocked at the behavior of some of the so-called agents and independent production companies.

Only trust agencies that are signatory to the Writer's Guild. DO NOT send money!

With production companies, do a little research before sending your material. Politely ask them to send you some details about who they are and what they've got going on. Don't be a victimized novice. Respect yourself and your material.

I'm now in my 40s and I recently wrote an awesome script (if I do say so myself). I'm guy shy about sending it to anyone. I may just make the movie myself.

Thanks for your posts.I

Thanks for your posts.I submitted a query and after reading this will NOT be sending my screenplay. As well if anyone knows a LEGITIMATE agent accepting inqueries please email me antonyhall75@Yahoo.com

You know, I sent my script to

You know, I sent my script to TSA 3 years ago. I go the same response from Sherry Fine as some people on here. However I never sent any money to them. Instead I emailed back and forth to them how I didn't have the money to give them and I will work on it. I have a friend in the biz who did some coverage for me and was an entertainment lawyer as well. he tolf me the agency seemed okay but that I should protect myself further. i didn't because I never followed thru. My script has been re-written and updated as of this week and I still need to get it represented. But now I'm afraid that the version I submitted to TSA is in someones hands to do bad things with. How do go about finding out if that is true? What should I expect?

I am a Georgian

I am a Georgian script-writer. I live in the capital of Georgia. how find real script-agent? somebody help me?

thank you all so much...I to,

thank you all so much...I to, wrote a book, and it was published. the book is called. Miakoda: power of the moon. it is a great story, and fictional adventure for all ages. it is now available online with amazon.com and it truly would make for a great movie...here is the synopsis:

It all started on a cold night in January 2001. We had just landed in Anchorage, Alaska. My mother and father got off the plane first, followed by my little sisters, Jennifer and Devon, and then me carrying my 2 ½ month old Malamute puppy. Thus begins this first novel by Jon Parker inspired by his beloved malamute, Nayanna. The narrator is the Parker’s son named Jonathan who lives on a small ranch with his family. The Parkers live near an Indian man named Blackwolf, who teaches the children about surviving the wild, wolves, and the power of the moon. This inspiring tale describes the true bond between humans and their best friends, our beloved dogs. And an adventure that will never be forgotten.

anyway, i too sent my work to: the screenplay agency..and they accepted my work. i just got the email this morning about it. and was so excited that i called several friends and family members. i even thaught the $249.00 for the critique, and pitch was not a bad deal. however i have not sent them a dime yet. i am thinking however of telling them yes, and please send me the contract. this way i have there contract, and can have it looked over. and have them checked out. i have a friend who is a lawyer. i am so glad i found this site with all of your posts. i almost made the mistake...not only am i dissapointed. but now i have the pain staking task of telling my friends and family that i found out this company is nothing more than a scam artist, and my dream for my book has been crushed. However, i will not let this stop me. i know my book has movie potential. a good friend is a play producer and director in new york. he told me it is very good. so i will press on. if anyone know of a good screen play agent. please email me at jonrp069@comcast.net thanks alot.

I am a writer with several

I am a writer with several books published and a freelance article writer and advocate for grandparents rights. I was approached by these scammers and become wary when they sent me an email about my book 'In Yahweh's Hands' wanting to turn it into a script. It would make a good movie, but the email was sending up huge red flairs for me. No phone number, no address, everything done by electronic submission and email sent up warnings and so I decided to take a better look at this company before handing it to my agent who would have recognized them for the cheats they are. The prey on writers who are indepentant of an agent or agency and by the time the writer understands what is going on it is to late. Beware the screen play agency is exactally right, they need to be stopped.

Does anyone know anything

Does anyone know anything about du Jour Films and Entertainment, and have you ever done business with them?

i would love, like Kismuth,

i would love, like Kismuth, to have an answer concerning his question:

"Well, my question is, if established and real agents only take writers that are referred to them from someone in the business and most if not all of the contests and adds for new agents and new writers are crap, then how does a writer get their work seen and sold?"

This article made me think

This article made me think twice. I am just about to post 30 pages of 120 pages of my screeplay to WLS screenplay agency (script@wlsscreenplayagency.com). Is this agency for rea? If not, I need help with my screenplay.

They should spend all this

They should spend all this energy on actually working trying get writers' material sold instead of running a scam. They almost had me but they have two websites. They are almost identical except one seems incomplete. I'm always suspicious of everyone. When they sent the second email. The way they worded it was "We will not fire you because of a poor critique." They will not fire me? Any writer worth his salt should see the foreshadowing here. They repeated say they are not asking for money, which means they WILL ask for money soon. Reminds me of when my boss came to me and out of nowhere she told me I didn't have to worry about my job, I wasn't going anywhere. I immediately began to worry about my job. They fired me two months later.

I got caught. I went the book

I got caught. I went the book to film route. I believed it because of the book to film angle. Anyway, why doesn't someone stop them! Who can we contact to stop this fraudulent company.

I was surprised when they

I was surprised when they asked for my manuscript because I'd kind of bungled the form. When they wanted to send me a contract I was dubious, because my manuscript wasn't that great. I wondered if I'd underestimated my work but when I saw the editing fees, I really backed off. There was just something seriously wrong and when I looked it up I found out about the scam. Thanks you guys.

It sounds like a scram, it

It sounds like a scram, it to smooth, and they want money up front. Then it is a scram. Stay away.

Just another quick thanks to

Just another quick thanks to everyone who has contributed here.

Myself and another writer have just reached as far as being asked to send a script to The Screenplay Agency- needless to say they would probably have loved it, though it would a need a quick $90 tweak or several.

Whilst you try to remain calm and objective about these things you can never help letting your imagination run away with you. Disappointment aside, I'm glad of the chance to get out before it went any further.

Appreciate the warning, and best of luck to everyone here with their projects.
May our setbacks mould us and make us wiser.

I made the $90 mistake of

I made the $90 mistake of working with the Screenplay Agency. The critique that I paid for was absolutely bunk and useless and basically said that I needed to have the screenplay edited for a large fee. When I found out that the same company that "accepted" me had referred me to the same company who was supposed to edit the work, I knew it was a scam. If you've made this mistake, it's really easy to get out of the contract that they make you sign.

I got me letter today, and it

I got me letter today, and it seemed weired that I got it so early in the morning. One thing, they said I could use my own critique person, but theres would be a discount if I used them. Anyways, I haven't spent any money and I thank god I am smart enough to know something was wrong. I am just a little heart broken.

I SUBMITTED MY SYNOPSIS TO

I SUBMITTED MY SYNOPSIS TO THEM AND TWO DAYS LATER THEY ASKED ME FOR MY SCRIPT. I THOUGHT I'D MADE IT. A COUPLE DAYS AFTER I SENT MY SCRIPT, I WAS TOLD I HAD A WINNER AND IF I WOULD PAY $90.00... THAT'S WHEN I WOKE UP. AFTER A LITTLE LOOKING AROUND, I FOUND LOTS OF INFO. ABOUT THEM. THEY ALMOST HAD ME. I HAD STARS IN MY EYES. BEWARE...JIM

Dear lord, I came across your

Dear lord, I came across your warning too late. I sent them my script, they responded (in less than a week!), telling me my work had marketable value, and suggested that it be "critiqued" by some agency they referred me to. The evaluation was mailed to me in double-quick time, with another suggestion - that my work be "edited" by the same party who critiqued it. The charges involved were also listed. Then, and only then, did the three words flash in my brain -"What a racket!" And there you have all you need to know of my story. I won't bristle if you label me sucker. That's what I am. But it's kinda hard to see your dreams evaporate and realize that you've been taken for a ride - at one and the same time. I hope you read this, Sherry, and I hope you feel good.

I just read your bit on the

I just read your bit on the screenplay agency. I wasn't too surprised but disappointed. I guess I was desperate and I had sent in my screenplay to them and got the same response. Thankfully i've not sent in any money.
Well, my question is, if established and real agents only take writers that are referred to them from someone in the business and most if not all of the contests and adds for new agents and new writers are crap, then how does a writer get their work seen and sold?

Hi, I came across this

Hi, I came across this because a couple of friends of mine from the film industry had posted this in a ‘film group’ that I am a part of. It sounded a little suspicious and so I checked them out. No one in these networks had heard of them before, which is odd in itself. Anyway, I did a little checking and back when I first started out in my writing career and didn’t know anything about writing books (but was doing it anyway- go figure) I fell for a scam… ooops- I mean ‘literary agency’ called St. Literary Agency- Most of you now know them as Stylus. Stay away from them as well- you see, Sherry Fine and Robert Fletcher have been investigated numerous times on fraudulent behavior and are always scamming people out of money, and these two characters are the ones behind the Screenplay Agency and Stylus Literary Agency. They know nothing about being an agent and are only interested in how much money they can take from you to ‘launch your career’—It is pathetic that people have to resort to trashing someone’s dreams in order to make money. Most people are so hurt by this type of thing that they give up on their aspirations to succeed as a writer ---
Thankfully, I am now successful and did not need an agent or a ‘good’ publisher to get me here… just a lot of hard work and diligence. I hope you all heed this warning—the writer of this site/post (Solomon Rothman) knows what he is talking about, thanks to you for looking out for the unsuspecting writer.

~Manda

I contacted the "Screenplay

I contacted the "Screenplay Agency" because I found them on the Web. At first I thought that they were legitimate, but then Sherry Fine
e-mailed me asking for all of these fees, ranging from $150 up. I knew that something was wrong.

I e-mailed her your website, and she told me that perhaps I should ask you to be my agent. Perhaps I should.
