Jathia's Wager open source scifi movie I'm happy to announce that we're (open source films) moving into production on the science fiction movie entitled "Jathia's Wager" and I'm issuing an open invitation to the community of movie lovers around the world to help with all aspects of the production.

The idea is to create an ‘open source movie', where people from all over the world come together and contribute to the creation of original film. Below you can read about what we're doing and how you can contribute, but first here is the logline from the initial script: Jathia's Wager is a science fiction story about a young man living in an isolated community of humans, who must make a life changing decision about his future and his species. Help us make an open source movie

Are you at least a little bit excited? You have the chance to help create a movie that millions of people will see. Even when it was just an idea (7 page concept and 1 image) it started attracting world-wide press ( see press links at bottom of this post) This film is going to be produced under "Open Source Films" a California non-profit with the following missions statement: Our mission is to create, produce and publicly release "open source films" which allow free access for the community to watch, share, reinterpret, and contribute to the creative process. There is way too much information than I can cram into this post so visit the official "Jathia's Wager Open Source Science Fiction Movie" portion of this website and stay up to date with our progress. To summarize, we're currently in the pre-production phase finding set locations, building props, finalizing the script and organizing the resources to go into production and begin casting (hopefully in 2 months from now) . Now here are summaries of how you can specifically help out in the actual production of the film. 1. Volunteer your time and talent to help with ( Review the official Jathia's Wager website and then join our meetup and come to our production meetings) a. Acting b. Video editing and post production help c. Special effects d. Audio production e. Cinematography f. Sound production g. Production Assistance h. Costume creation i. Makeup on set j. Creative input 2. Contribute a shooting location (house, apartment, land) within driving distance of Ventura, CA and Los Angeles (you'll have to sign a location release form and give us specific shooting dates that will work for you). - Review the official Jathia's Wager website and then join our meetup for updates and meetings) Here are the different scene locations we still need to find:

Holding Cell where Jathia the main character is locked (needs to look cold and bleak, maybe an empty room where a few props could be placed)
Sections of a futuristic town community (I'm thinking a very modern house touched with post production effects and few well placed props, but I'm open to suggestions)
Storage room where "the machine" is located - should have hard floors and be slightly cold looking, minimalist may work here.
Ezra's House - A home that looks like it could be from any time period, again with a few minimalist props to put you in the "sci-fi" mood.

What you get in return for helping with this movie: The satisfaction, experience, and fun involved with producing a real movie, one that (see press clipping above) will probably be seen by millions of people. A DVD copy of the movie Free website advertising in the form of a premier sponsor link and bio to your personal or business website (when we get millions of hits you'll have free advertising to reach them with the message you want). Here are some easy thing all of you can do to contribute even if you're not able or want to help with the actual movie making process: 1. Join our movie community and submit a movie review and / or movie / filmmaking related article (we're holding a contest that pays $1,000 to the winner). 2. Donate $ to the 501c nonprofit Open Source Films and receive a tax deductible receipt. (via paypal - donate buttons coming later this week - promise! ) 3. Tell your friends and help us spread the word When I originally posted the idea online, it was a 7 page draft, a quick Photoshop movie poster, and an idea. I enjoyed Primer, but unlike that movie the machine in this script is functioning to introduce technology beyond what the current human civilization is a capable of creating, it sets the scene and introduces the idea of a more advanced species living outside the community. I like it when people comment so I won't say wait till you read the script, but you should really check out the newest draft and you'll see that this particular story has not been done like this to my knowledge. I've never scene anything like it. Of course the themes have been used before, almost all science fiction and all story telling in general can be reduced down to simple struggles (Star Wars 1 is an almost scene by scene retelling of the ancient hero story), the twist and plot development succeed in treading new ground, at least for me. With that said, I'm open to changing the location of the machine if someone has a better suggestion that can be done on no budget.

Not having read anything but this page, a 'storage unit' with a 'machine' sounds a lot like the movie Primer:

I don't know if your 'machine' is one that bends time, but if so, I would change the location, as it has been done (and very well so) before.

I should be able to make it to the meetups =). About the film crew: is it cool if I bring my friends when all of us are free (which means it probably would be times other then meetups) =)!! I think it works better if we can talk about it. If you'd like to start ur project sooner..please call me and talk about it so I can talk to my friends with all things including their time =). Emailing is not as easy as communicating on the phone. The sooner you talk to me about the project..the sooner it gets started..u get it =)?! have a nice day & talk to you soon.

This is a fun project that I can help with =). As a matter of fact, I have friends who can do all your needs: A-J =)!!!! Since this is volunteering project, several people can still do that all the way from A-J =). I'd love to get all of them together for the meetup..however, it really depends on their schedule and your schedule.

But I'll get them together for ya..and we can talk about the project & get things going, cool =)?! Just call me when you have any questions & I'll contact you about different infos & questions from this project..because it still seems general to me @ this point...that's ok =) I know this is in a pre-production stage..but I'll talk to my friends about this project for you & let you know what's happening, cool =)?!
