I kept meaning to see ‘Knocked up' when it came to the cinema but for some reason never did get there so the other night I sat down and watched it on DVD and found that for once I actually DO agree with the movie critics out there and absolutely love this movie! Seth Rogen plays Ben, a slacker who has spent the last few years of his life sat at home living off the compensation money from an accident involving a postal truck and his foot. He and his friends spend their days getting drunk, high and cataloguing nude movie shots on their webpage which they are convinced is going to make them millions. Katherine Heigl however is on the opposite side of the scale as Alison; she's a workaholic desperate to get herself a spot in the limelight presenting an entertainment show. Living with her considerably well off sister and her husband (Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd) she has every inch of her career meticulously planned out.
The two meet up in a bar one night and get very, very drunk which of course leads to one significant night of pleasure ultimately resulting in Katherine turning up on Ben's doorstep a few months later to tell him that she's pregnant. Ben's reaction to this is hilarious as he hopefully asks "Pregnant with emotion?" From there things get really interesting as the two characters try to balance their lives together and deal with pregnancy and eventually the birth of their child. There are some great scenes along the way, including one where Ben and Pete go to watch cirque du soleil whilst under the influence of certain substances and the birth scene which is actually a scarily real portrayal of the way things tend to happen and rarely go as planned. The director of The 40 Year Old Virgin Judd Apatow ‘Knocked Up' brings to the screen a perfect blend of comedy with a hint of genuine sentiment that is rarely seen in movies like this which are, let's face it mostly aimed at the guys! A lot of the humour in Knocked Up will have your boyfriend/significant other rolling on the floor in hysterics and whilst YES the gags are very funny it's this mix of real emotions and sentiment alongside the gross and sarcastic humour that really make the movie what it is. Knocked Up could have so easily been your average run of the mill film ... but thankfully with a little thought and some great actors and directors it has turned into one of 2007's best comedies of the year.
