Jathia Returns

This is part 4 in a series of filmmaking discussions on audio post-production for the open source SciFi movie Jathia’s Wager.

E-mail from Dopplegang (music composition audio post production) sent 1/23/09 after viewing the rough cut

I can do the music in plenty of time so it can all be mixed and good. My only concern is scoring it to the final real time length, but most of the work can be done before anyway. I'll send you something tomorrow that is so far sounding dark and cold, somewhat minimal but has some more depth. I can use the theme established previously in the trailer if you like; getting hold of some new instruments but the same music can be played. Do you want the tempo to change anywhere? I think the piece generally asks for some minimal and some more noticeable parts, ebbing and flowing with 1 - 2 simple themes, one for the scary robot approaching from afar (outside?) and one for the hope and dream of being highly evolved? Or maybe more? We shall soon see. I envision echoing deep somewhat ancient bells for the scary parts.

I'm not sure what Ami will decide sound wise but I said I would be more than happy to read the part in a way that may go with the AD's visual manner as well as being authorative and bigger. I did acting for over 20 years but who knows. My filmmaker friend Jonas Marczy (http://www.jonas.marczy.net/) came over tonight and we watched. He said your Director of Photography is doing brilliant stuff and I had to agree! Just as a personal opinion, and I'm not alone on this, the section of dialog between the AD (don't know the name of that role) and Jathia perhaps let's down the flow which was really well established, in terms of the inventive Photography and general flow of action and visual events or angles. One or two other shots might be called for for the slow rhythm of change which is really good. I'm aware without the extra repeated lines it will be shorter. But I'm dead excited about this collaboration, it looks great! Well done after losing files.

Anyway back to the music which is my thing here.  ;)
