Stardust Movie Review Commentary and Analysis
The other day I was lucky enough to go to a preview screening of Stardust here in the UK, it is a film I had desperately wanted to see for months so to say that I was a little excited was an understatement. The film is based on the book by British author Neil Gaiman with screenplay by the fabulous Jane Goldman (Wife of movie reviewer and chat show host Jonathan Ross) and Matthew Vaughn who also directed the movie. It stars a whole host of amazing actors both British and American and is one of those movies that I found myself to be instantly engrossed in. From the moment we hear the narrator (Sir Ian McKellen) begin to tell the tale of the stars and the mystical powers they possess you know that you are in for a magical treat the likes of which have not been seen since the brilliantly funny ‘The Princess Bride'.
Charlie Cox plays Tristan, a bumbling young boy who goes in search of a fallen star (Claire Danes) to bring back to Victoria the woman he is in love with (Played by Sienna Miller) now usually I'm not a fan of Sienna, but she was wonderful in Stardust, the role really suited her and it looked like she was having fun with it. Another big surprise was Claire Danes; she put on an amazing English accent for the role of Yvaine the fallen star and she looks truly beautiful in every scene. It is great to see her back on the big screen again! As Tristan and Yvaine try make their way back to the other side of the wall that separates the magic realm and the normal world they begin to fall in love, but their happiness is somewhat hindered by the evil Witch Lamia (Michelle Pfeiffer) and her two sisters who want to cut out Yvaine's heart to keep them forever young.
Michelle is stunning in her youthful guise and absolutely hideous in her haggard old form, there were some younger children in the audience and they were a little scared during some of Lamia's scenes so bear this in mind if you are taking your own kids. Even though it is rated PG there are some quite tense scenes that have you on the edge of your seat. Stardust was an absolute joy to watch from start to finish, it is a true modern fairytale romance that will definitely leave you feeling warm and fuzzy long after you have left the cinema, I can't help thinking it should have been released a bit nearer Christmas though, it would make the perfect film to go and watch on a cold December's night! Oh, and yes it's true what everyone is saying about Robert De Niro, he steals the show with his portrayal of Captain Shakespeare and it definitely won't be what you are expecting! Watch it for yourself if you haven't already done so to find out why... What did you think to Stardust? Are you a fan like me or did you think it was a bit of a disappointment? I have to say this is the kind of film I usually shy away from - I'm not into fantasy and magic normally, but this actually sounds like it might be worth watching.
Thanks for an informative article Becky.
