The Cellar Door Movie Review and Analysis

Well, what can I say about The Cellar Door? The truth is, I really wanted to like this movie. From the official synopsis it sounds great, see:

The girl next door, having coffee, lunch with a friend, shopping, unaware she is becoming an obsession. She has been chosen.

A young woman wakes to find herself imprisoned in the basement of a serial killer. She is not the first to be entrapped in this diabolical torture chamber. She is not the first to captivate his perverse affection, Herman has been searching for the perfect girl, but all he's collected are pieces - a chunk of hair; a severed finger; a jar of blood - and now, the alluring and beautiful Rudy.

Imprisoned in a wooden cage and yet refusing to play along in his twisted game, she has only her wits to use against his savage and murderous insanity. Will she win the desperate, hallucinatory game of cat and mouse and escape through the Cellar Door, or die trying?

Now from that it sounds like this film will be a sure fire hit, but unfortunately one of the main things that lets the movie down is its acting. James DuMont is actually pretty good as Herman, the strange and creepy recluse, but the rest of the cast don't seem to be on par. The young woman in the cage (Rudy) played by Michelle Tomlinson is given a rather weak role to play, and frequently misses opportunities to escape despite having a number of weapons at close reach.

I felt that the movie started to drag just over half way through and found myself wondering if I even really cared about watching the end. That's never a good sign!

Does this movie also bear some resemblance to an old Dennis Hopper film? I'm sure I remember a movie in which he kept a young woman in his basement but can't remember for the life of me what it was called!

Anyways, if you are a real horror nut you'll probably check this film out just to see for yourself and form your own opinion, but I hope you don't feel as let down as I did when the final credits roll. A real disappointment!
