Will Smith plays struggling salesman Chris Gardner a man who is desperate to provide for his young son Christopher and overcome the challenges in his life that seem to be hell bent on destroying them leaving them homeless and destitute. When Chris realises that people no longer seem to be interested in buying the bone scanning machines he travels the city selling to hospitals and medical units he finds himself put in one of the most difficult situations a father can face. Struggling to keep his family afloat he throws himself into his job, working all hour's god sent to try and sell enough just to buy food for his son and keep a roof over their head. When they are forced to leave their apartment the severity of the situation sets in and Chris realises that he is going to have to risk everything to try and gain back some sort of normality for himself and Christopher.
He applies for a lucrative stockbroker's job and through perseverance and dedication fights to become the lucky one out of 20 applicants who make it through. However, what he doesn't realise is that the hard part still isn't over, with no money, no home and his son relying on him he is forced to move from homeless shelter's to shopping centre toilets to stay afloat. There are several things that I really loved about this movie; one was the fact that Will Smith's actual son Jaden Smith starred alongside him proving that he has definitely inherited both his mother's and father's acting genes as he gives a genuinely strong performance in every scene.
Their real life connection as father and son made the chemistry on screen feel even more real and proved to be the foundations of the whole movie with the touching relationship being the only thing that remained constant and stable throughout the journey. The fact that this is based on a true story also gives you a sense of admiration when watching, although some of the scenes have most likely been dramatised a little for Hollywood the foundations of it are real and show how one man's determination to better himself and to provide for his family motivated him beyond belief. Will Smith obviously took his role seriously and looks a far cry from his usual self as he plays a gaunt, thin and tired Chris Gardner. Ultimately I absolutely loved this movie but it isn't the sort of thing you would really watch over and over, its tough going at times and definitely not one to watch if you want to relax after a hard day's work! However, if you are looking for an intelligent and genuinely touching movie with a sense of realism and fighting spirit then you should definitely get hold of this one on DVD for your own collection.
