Why I HATED the Watchmen Movie – Review Analysis Commentary
There were multiple times I found myself shaking in my seat, with a WTF facial expression. I saw a midnight showing the day it came out. Well into the movie at least two people behind me fell asleep and started snoring, people had to shake them to wake them up. I was and still am to a degree a fan of the director Zack Synder. I saw both Dawn of the Dead and the 300 in theaters and will still check out his upcoming films Guardians, but Watchmen was a turd.
I re-watched the trailer to see if I had missed any clues to why I would not enjoy this film, and again the trailer is awesome. It shows a high stylized montage of action sequences and no real information on the plot or subplots. I wish I could get the time I spent watching this film back, it wasn't only terrible, but the ridiculous plot and dark philosophy kept hitting you in the face and when I asked myself, 'could this get any more ridiculous', up popped another shot of the super being - Dr Manhattan complete with blue skin and a dangling penis. I guess he's too cool for clothes in addition to being magically have buff steroid pumping muscles that he doesn't use or need for anything. The main plot is retarded. That's right retarded. For all you comic book buffs who love your graphic novels, the plot in this movie wouldn't be very convincing to an 8 year old. Grow up. I'm not saying movies like the Dark Knight are even in the realm of the possible, but at least they play out within an fictional world that does obey some kind of internal logic and only has a few contradictions. Other comic book films like the Tim Burton Version of Batman or Xmen, successful create an alternative universe that's so fantasy filled it doesn't bother you to see a hot chick in spandex kick a mutant's butt. This film and underlying story tries to take itself seriously as a critique of the dark side of human nature and absolutely wreaks with anarchistic undertones. It continually attempts to keep you in a "real world" mindset by referencing real historic people and events (including President Nixon) set to a cultural iconic sound track including Bob Dylan, Jimmy Hendrix, and Simon and Garfunkel. If you're going to continually make references with culture iconic music and real history, it should follow at least the confines of the real world, or specifically state what laws or magic the characters are allowed to do. This movie does not succeed on either level. Girls without any visible super power of any kind, weighting at most 130lbs, with 4 inch heels, in latex, beat the hell out of gangs of thugs, directly after real historic references. As soon as that happened, I start shaking my head and the WTF is this face came out. It's so ridiculous; it's hard to even stay focused on the plot points. There is no flash back scene and over the top gore like in Kill Bill, to keep it entertaining, it's just thrown in without warning and suppose to be taken seriously. Give me a break. Although the trailer is filled with nonstop violence and action, the actual move is so slow that at least two people behind me in the theater fell asleep. There was also audible snoring from a few rows in front of me. The main plot revolves around "Who done it" type mystery, but they fail to make you care about the characters to such a degree I just wanted them all to die and something more exciting to reveal itself. When there was action, lots of it revolved around hitting you in the face with the whole "ugliness of human nature" theme, which even included an absolutely disgusting scene of the comedian shooting a pregnant women (with his baby) in the face. The problem is we know nothing about the characters at this point and not only that, but there are no hints of anything even remotely interesting about any of them. It's supposed to be pointing out something dark about human nature, but comes off as completely preachy ridiculous crap. I'm not saying I want to read or watch a traditional hero story. For example, I LOVED Frank Miller's Sin City. Loved it, saw the film twice in theaters, but the reason why all that violence worked so well in that film is with all the visual stylization and the "dark city" the audience was successfully brought into a dreamy or nightmare like fantasy world and into the drama of it's citizens. This film shows you tons of violence and tries connecting it to actual real world events, but still in comic book style. It fails on all levels. SPOILER ALTER These are the type of people who I believe will love this mo
ve
- Individuals that honestly believe we're all doomed and that hate "human nature"
- People that only watch the pretty colors and visual effects and take no time to think about the themes and philosophy behind the scenes.
What were you suppose to get out of the main characters? They were like empty shells, skipped over in furious flash back scenes with almost no real character development at all. Rorschach was a super human (who didn't have any described abilities, but for some reason was basically invincible) who's flash back was the most stereotypical crazy person flash back you could imagine (mom was a prostitute who didn't like him etc). I mean what the hell are we suppose to feel for this guy? It doesn't make any sense, the flashbacks were extremely quick cuts so there was no character development or bonding, it's like we were being for fed a load of crap to make the character appear more feasible. The comedian was this total piece of crap character with absolutely nothing redeeming at all, who supposedly is fighting crime right along side the other characters. Why the hell would anyone fight crime or do anything next to someone like that. I'd fucking kill the guy if he was next to me, even if he was a super hero. The super human godlike matter changing being asks some dumb ass question about human life, would this be improved with a street or a shopping mall? That's ridiculous. Even an elementary philosophy student should understand that either a. Human Life has intrinsic value b. Human life does not have intrinsic value If human life has intrinsic value it would be worth saving by definition. If human life does not have intrinsic value then the decision to save or let human life die should be entirely based on the end result of what humans produce and create or made for selfish reasons (this is what I get out of humans). Instead of mentioning any of these things and making an argument on why human beings should not be saved, the dumbass god like being talks about beauty which is completely irrelevant to the conversation. Whether or not mars would look better or be improved with a shopping mall or parking lot is not a very wise way to talk or think about the future of an entire species. That would be like us discussing whether or not ant hills were pretty when talking about if humans should save an entire specifics of ant. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that is not a very logical way to look at things. Even worse, this being (Dr. Manhattan) later on says that the smartest human is no more dangerous to him than the smartest terminate, but that contradicts the fact that on mars he said some dumb girl who gave very un-insightful information somehow showed him the value of human life. Did I miss something here? The ending provided yet another total insult to common sense. Humans have survived two world wars thus far with death rates far outnumbering the 15 million from the attacks. Despite that and all the historic references in the film, magically because all these people died the whole world is going to hold hands and sing songs and there will never be another threat of nuclear extinction. That's ridiculous, the greatest danger to human life is not from nuclear war, if you do any research into technology the longer humans survive and the greater our technology develops, the more of a threat we become to ourselves and long term sustainability. Although I'm not scared about this, there are many, many, many things more dangerous and less all out than nuclear war which would still result in almost complete devastation of the human race (many of these are made into great movies like the Andromeda strain). Within just 10 years and definitely within 50 years the world would have forgotten about the devastation and once again resumed feuding and fighting with each other, just like what happened after both world wars. This time however, technology would have advanced and they'd have much more dangerous weapons than just nuclear bombs. In Watchman it suppose-ably took the smartest man alive to figure out the plot to kill a bunch of humans to prevent this mass apocalypse. I'd avoid this movie at all costs, it's terrible waste of almost 3 hours of your life and I know multiple people who saw it and agreed with me. Almost 50% of the top critics at rotten tomatoes gave it a bad review, so you've been warned.

The understanding of how
The understanding of how realisticly possible these events in the movie were to occuring could not have been better argued by G- Man. This movie is a question of the nature of man and how dimly capable of his own destruction he is. Excelent movie really envokes thought but, the idea that killing millions of people is going to save the planet's anhilation is quite rediculous...it just lengthens the course in which man is destined to follow...Now Free Energy That's A Plan! oh p.s. Dr. MANHATTAN is the idealized version of the ultimately refined and improved human being a.k.a. Made in God's Image...I think he represents the peak inwhich all man ultimately seek to improve themselves...So Erotic!
you're wrong G Man. Actually,
you're wrong G Man. Actually, fear is not what keeps people calm. Fear, if anything is known to make people parinoid. If the Soviet's really saw Moscow destroyed, they would definitely try to attack the US. Especially if they had all of these bombs in the first place. And especially if it was done by an American. Think about the war in Iraq. History has shown us, time and time again, once people get attacked, they go crazy and start on the offensive. Save millions for billions is a flawed way of thinking, especially since it doesnt work. There are many moral alternatives that are way more peaceful than this.
Just finished watching the
Just finished watching the movie. I have yet to read the novel. Just a point about your criticism. two world wars didn't prevent more killing. Though more people died int those wars, they were not killed by god - and certainly not by a god who used to be on our side. So humanity behaves itself lest it be once again smotified by a god that isn't even paying attention. God, as always is all that can keep humanity behaving itself, whether he exists or not.
Wasn't a movie I would ever
Wasn't a movie I would ever watch for the second time. Glad I saw it, but that's all.
William, you must not have
William, you must not have read my post.
I was talking about the movie. The movie was jam packed. If you don't have a good general knowledge, you won't get it.
I've never read the book. I can only imagine that the book explains everything so that if you don't have a good general knowledge, it will fill in the gaps for you.
I stumbled across this post because I was searching the net for any other insights or references in the movie I may have missed or to confirm the things I did pick up with a like mind.
Double edged sword. Rothman
Double edged sword. Rothman has to explain in detail why this movie sucked so damn bad to make it blog worthy at all; but in doing so he left himself vulnerable to anyone who disagrees to pick apart his opinion.
Simplified, this movie was too long, too slow, the plot was pretentious and negative and there was nothing in it of any redeeming quality. There was no character developement and there was not one antagonist that deserved any concern whatsoever as to their outcome.
So far, everyone's argument for the movie is that the graphic novel is exceptional and steeped in ironies, parodies and philosphical depth. If your defense of the movie is to "go read the book", you are making the argument for Rothman, not the movie. To that degree, I have less of a want to read the graphic novel since the movie it is "so true to" was such a waste of time.
It was a waste of my time and money. I wish I had walked out when the first group of fellow theatre goers did. Instead I stayed hoping for the movie to redeem itself. Alas, it never did. What a horrible movie.
Sol Your critique is
Sol
Your critique is simplistic and I don't think you understood the movie at all.
The value and messages in the movie (I'm now keen on reading the book) are steeped in reference, allegory, parody, and sliding doors. Without a decent general knowledge you're probably missing most of the movie. The movie (as I expect the book to be) are absolutely jam packed.
Examples of pop-cultural references you need to watch/read:
- Movie: Dr Strangelove (war-room scene and dialogue with russians from) and general theme of a "doomsday" device that forces the russians at bay (adapted in Watchmen as Dr Manhattan).
- Movie: Apocolypse Now (helicopter scene with Dr Manhattan in vietnam) brutality of war.
- Movie: Mad Max (aka The Roadwarrior) - post nuclear apocolypse movie made during the time the Watchmen was penned.
- Song: Times Are A Changing, during the prologue which re-writes history in a new alternate reality
- Song: Mozart's Reqium, a "death mask" piece, appears in Adrian's final scene and cements him as a self-fashioned lord of the underworld
- Book: 1984 (by Orwell), an artficially generated perpetual war and terror "us vs them" is used to create a sense of common enemy to align states.
- Book: The Blind Watchmaker. A book by athiest and evolutionist Richard Dawkins, writing about the occurence of life, evolution, and its unbiased nature (no god involved). The Watchmaker theme is explicit in the movie with a) title of the movie, and b) Dr Manhatten's dad is a watchmaker who teaches him this trade - resulting in the clockwork machine on mars and Dr Manhattans general philosophy (which is NOT bound by the dichotomy that either humans "are or aren't worth saving".. it's simply neither).
Some of the of historical references you need to read:
- The Manhatten Project = the projects by the US that resulted in the first atomic bombs, and the reason for Dr Manhattan's name and result of his nature and how he is used.
- Egyptian Mythology: the statues in Adrian's palace are of Anubis, lord of the underworld
- Egyptian Mythology & Macedonian History: Adrian's pet is a tiger with the ears of of Anubis in jackal form (Alexander the Great introduced tigers to the western world and had as pet)
- Two periods in history where WWIII appeared imminent were in the 50s/60's (Khrushchev, Castro, Bay of Pigs with "duck and cover"), and in the 80's during the era of Regan and Thatcher. The movie/story is a juxtaposition of these two periods.
Some of the parody you should be aware of:
- The loss of innocence in the notion of the "American Dream", "the American Way", a point made very clear in the dialogue between the Night Owl and Comedian.
- The loss of innocence of the 50's superheroes, who in that era where idealised as saints, and bringing them back down to earth.
- Nixon and Kissinger as babbling idiots and the military leaders.
- Nixon is not challenged or criticised in the movie that the lost of the eastern seaboard due to nuclear strike is an acceptable loss if all of Russia is wiped out - whilst the wiping out of major cities by Adrian is challenged.
Some of the philosophical issues debated:
- "The good of the many outweigh the good of the few"
- Absolute power corrupts absolutely
- Ruling elites/classes (the heros become this even though they are supposed to protect from this).
- Dichotomy of good vs evil (where Dr Manhatten (continuously referred to as a god, is mostly devoid of attachment for human life) and his counterpoint of Adrian who sets himself as lord of the underworld and saviour of humanity through dirty deeds.). Both of these are very non-judeochristian views, but tie into ancient versions of dieties who have their own agendas.
- The line between madness and genius
- The ends justify the means
- Game Theory: My enemy's enemy is my friend (that mankind only ever unite in the face of a greater adversity)
- History is written by conquerors
- The Effect of Context on perception of actions: (Killing in war is war or murder? Pushing the button to kill is ok if you're a president but not if you're a superhero? A police uniform gives rights to uphold the law but other uniforms do not?)
Maybe you'll get more out of this movie if you see it during a reasonable hour. 12am session! no wonder people were falling asleep, and no wonder you're brain wasn't switched on.
What you said "It's a joke.
What you said "It's a joke. It's always a joke".
When i first watched this
When i first watched this movie i was similarly appalled at the quality of such a movie and how i couldn't seem to immerse myself due to inaccuracies. Supposedly regular people punching through brick walls, throwing people through plate glass windows and catching bullets? My friend sitting next to me however was a comic enthusiast and completely understood all the various questions and contextual influences outlined in G-Mans post.
It was not until i had spent analyzing both the movie and the comic version of the text however that i began to understand how these features were irrelevant to the questions posed by watchmen. It is a text of its time and reflects this just as many science fiction texts do. It makes comment on society and simply uses the form of flawed superheroes to do this.
Just commented on
Just commented on GrilledBanana's review so won't go into too much detail here. I would suggest that you read the book. You're missing a lot of points that the book tries to make. Granted, the movie may not stand up well by itself, but you clearly don't understand what you're trying to criticize. If nothing else, read the wikipedia page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchmen
Also the superheroes are
Also the superheroes are really just people who for whatever personal reason decide to put on costumes and fight crime. There's nothing special about them besides a good physique and for most a good amount of intelligence. Dr. Manhattan is more or less a god due to his capacity to change and create things. Manhattan thinks the way he does because he is no longer human and the world he experiences is facts and science. He's naked because he doesn't have human self consciousness. Also your comment on not caring about fanboys or whatever, trying to fit all the novel had to offer in a movie is not possible. You being the lazy presumptuous person you are chose the cheapened version of an interesting story. You should think about retiring from blogging or whatever it is you do, hiding behind the internet to make unfounded and not very well thought claims will only make you dumber than you seem to be already. Don't have kids either, I'm assuming you're straight and that woman don't find you repulsive, the world needs less retards.
I'm sorry you need to watch
I'm sorry you need to watch the movie again and actually pay attention this time.
I loved they way they bridged
I loved they way they bridged different generations throughout Watchmen, both with props (like the floppy discs) and with music
Great reply G-man. Took the
Great reply G-man. Took the words right out of my mouth, and more succinctly in fact.
Watchmen was designed for
Watchmen was designed for philosophical debate, but you seemed to have missed the big questions it asks. For instance, you state: Even an elementary philosophy student should understand that either
a. Human Life has intrinsic value
b. Human life does not have intrinsic value
If human life has intrinsic value it would be worth saving by definition.
The question Watchmen asks is not if humanity is worth saving, but if it can be saved at all. In Watchmen, humanity is on the cusp of annihilation and will destroy itself. Even after humanity has been "saved" the moviepals_comments on human nature imply that nothing has really been accomplished apart from buying time for the human race. Eventually humanity will destroy itself, even if it hasn't done so this time. If humanity authors its own destruction, does it deserve to be destroyed?
But this is only a side argument, the real big questions being proposed regard abuses of power and utilitarian objectives. Is it okay to kill 20 million people if I save 5 billion? That's the premise from which the "villain" Adrien Veidt is working. He says yes it's okay, and Roshach says no. Beyond that, the story wants you to make a mental leap and realize that there are governments, corporations, and individuals who make these decisions in real life, and you and I are potential casualties of those decisions. Alan Moore's other book "V for Vendetta" expands on this idea a bit more fully.
You also stated: These are the type of people who I believe will love this move
Individuals that honestly believe we’re all doomed and that hate “human natureâ€
People that only watch the pretty colors and visual effects and take no time to think about the themes and philosophy behind the scenes.
I really think you might benefit from a rereading of the original story, or a bit more thought into what you saw. Like all philosophical and moral debates, Watchmen is intended as an affront to your own or the generally accepted notions of human nature and morality. It is intended to be introspective, and you should be asking yourself what is human nature, and what is moral. But beyond this, you should be challenged to justify your conclusions.
Historically, the cold war struck every one with fear of nuclear holocaust (the setting of the movie). What prevented war was an idea referred to as M.A.D. (mutually assured destruction). When Watchmen ends, the world is "saved" by fear. Fear is what prevented war in the 80's, and if the U.S.S.R. had not collapsed, would fear have been enough to keep us alive up to now? Those are the big questions Watchmen asks, and which you seem to miss in your review.
a plot for 8 year olds?
a plot for 8 year olds? perhaps you just didn't understand it. watchmen is not a typical comic book action story, and therefore doesn't have a plot to match that.
did you even read the book, it's not a hard read... i'm sure you can manage. maybe not though, you seem a little dim.
I liked your article but it
