Rewriting Wikipedia with Multiple Release Versions and Movie Marketing Hype - Making Filmmaking History part 7 of 14
photo credit: Arturo de Albornoz about the wikipedia article open content film... This article not good and needs to be rewritten. they mention movies under this category which are not open souce. You know, no one defined open souce movies so far. that's why everyone who makes a movie available under any cc license thinks it is an open souce film. and it is not.
I will rewrite this article within this week to make a clear cut between free-cc licensed films and open source movies. still bwns is the first movie ever to release sources. that should be clearly pointed out! Tim Thank you for adding it because it was very important - I wanted those to be available for other filmmakers to be able to use and make derivatives from (even commercial ones). I personally own 100% of the rights to BWNS and could re-release it under any license I want (including by-sa) and I'll probably do that if this definition sticks. For Jathia's Wager I'll have to make multiple releases, because I can't secure the commercial rights to the music. I do plan however to release a version of the entire film with all the post production done under a by-sa so it meets the definition enough for me to market it as an open source movie. Officially only that cut would be a true "open source movie", but no one is really going to care about that as long as it's freely available with the source files and encouraging of derivatives. To me personally the movie is the most important, not the label or the marketing hype. I'm 100% behind the free culture movement, but I don't endorse people taking things to the extreme and missing the "idea" behind it. To me that defeats the ENTIRE purpose. I know there are sooooooooooooo many purists online, especially in the technical field (like software), but I'm not one of them. I'd rather have better music, even if it means the final release may not have the "official" seal of approval. A version of the finished film (Jathia's Wager) will be released un the by-sa and will meet that definition, although I am going to release another version that may have specific conditions that fall outside that definition. To me the movie is the most important thing. This project is only the beginning, I've got LOTS more scripts and plans for an open source web series (one that wil continue and have part of it be filmed all over the world). Solomon PS. May I publish this conversation on my blog? I think it's very interesting and incredibly relevant to the ongoing discussion around open source movies. This is part of a conversation between open source filmmakers Solomon Rothman (Boy Who Never Slept, Jathia's Wager) and Tim Baumann (Valkaama) that begins as a discussion on collaboration and ends with a proposal for defining what an open source movie actually means.
